Scholarship Terms & Conditions

Contest Terms and Conditions:

Eligibility: This Contest is only open to individuals who are: (i) 19 years of age or older at the close date of the contest or have graduated from high school; (ii) able to obtain a Canadian study permit and visa (if applicable); (iii) registered SoundCloud.com users; and, (iv) committed and able to attend VFS in 2012. Contest winners must successfully fulfill all Vancouver Film School admission requirements prior to commencement of studies. Persons enrolled but who have not started study at Vancouver Film School as of October 1, 2011 are eligible to enter.

Employees of Vancouver Film School and SoundCloud are ineligible to enter this contest.

By entering this contest and accepting the prize, contestants consent to the use of their name, city of residence, entry submission, quotes and/or photograph in any related publicity.

How to Enter: Eligible SoundCloud users must create an original audio track in response to the contest challenge. Participants may submit up to three entries, with a maximum of one entry per category. Any entries submitted over and above the maximum three will be disqualified. Each entry must be no more than ninety (90) seconds in length. Entries may be submitted at any time during the Open Call for Entries. All entries must be submitted via the contest website. Please include your first and last name and category in the title of your track. You must also tag your audio track with “VFS SoundCloud 2011 Scholarship Contest”.

All entries must be submitted via the contest page: vfs.com/soundcloud

In addition, participants must answer the following questions:

  • Who they are.
  • Why sound is a passion for them.
  • What equipment/software/techniques they used to create their piece.
  • Why they are sure this is what they want to do.

Responses should be posted in the text description field of the audio track entry. There is no limit on word count.

The submission period begins at 7:00 PM Central European Standard Time (CEST) on October 31, 2011 and ends at 11:59 PM (CEST) on November 13, 2011.

Contest Prize: VFS will provide the Contest winner with the following Contest prize: Full scholarship to Vancouver Film School’s Sound Design for Visual Media program valued at CDN $28,250 for Canadian students and $43,250 for International Students valid for all start dates in 2012 (January, February, April, June, August and October). VFS will also provide second and third place winners a $10,000 scholarship to the Sound Design for Visual Media program valid for all start dates in 2012 (January, February, April, June, August and October). The scholarships are subject to availability, and will be honoured in 2013 if a seat is not available in 2012. The contest winners must arrange for their own visa and study permit if applicable, cover all costs of travel to the school, and living expenses during the period of study.

Judging to Determine Finalists: All eligible Entries received during the Open Call for Entries will be judged by a panel of judges, including representatives from VFS to determine the top 20: 10 finalists and 10 alternates.

VFS will determine the top 10 finalists and top 10 alternates based on the quality of the submission, while also taking into account the popularity (through plays, favourited, shared, and comments) of every submission. The intent is that VFS would be happy to award any of the finalists the scholarships.

Judging Criteria:

Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Creativity
  • Originality
  • Frequency spectrum in mix
  • Dynamic Range
  • Sound fidelity
  • Listenability
  • Diversity of sounds used
  • Stereo image
  • Selling factor/Engagement
  • Consistency

Finalist/Alternate Notification: The ten (10) Finalists and ten (10) Alternates will be notified by email (attached to the finalist’s SoundCloud account) and will be required to sign and properly execute a number of release documents. If any documents sent by any means to a Finalist/Alternate are returned as undeliverable or if a Finalist or Alternate fails to properly execute and return all documents, or if a Finalist or Alternate is found not to be eligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules and/or the terms and conditions, the Finalist or Alternate will be disqualified and the next highest scoring Entry may be moved up to a Finalist or Alternate place and contestant notified.

Member Voting to Determine Winner: Up to ten (10) Finalist Entries will be posted on the Contest Site for SoundCloud member voting. Registered SoundCloud members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite audio track daily during the Member Voting period, with a limit one vote per SoundCloud member during the Member Voting period. In the event of a tie, all tied entries will be re-judged by an additional judge who will break the tie.

For the Finalists, the public votes will count for everything – the top rated Finalist will be awarded the full-tuition VFS Sound Design for Visual Media scholarship, and the second and third most highly voted entries will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship each.

The winners will be officially announced on or close to December 15, 2011, and will be notified personally through email. The winners must respond within ten (10) working days of notification. If a response is not received by the winners within ten (10) working days, she/he forfeits the prize.
