In this blog, we’re featuring some homegrown projects and American productions currently filming in Vancouver and around Canada. With Vancouver alone hosting more than thirty productions, there are a lot to choose from. Here are some film and TV projects that caught our eye.
ALIAS GRACE (CBC/Netflix) — Miniseries
“Based on the true story of Grace Marks, a housemaid and immigrant from Ireland who was imprisoned in 1843, perhaps wrongly, for the murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear. Grace claims to have no memory of the murder yet the facts are irrefutable. A decade after, Dr. Simon Jordan tries to help Grace recall her past.” — IMDB
We’re very excited to see CBC joining forces with Netflix, especially when it involves Canadian legends Margaret Atwood and Sarah Polley — swoon! Anna Paquin was recently cast in the miniseries, along with Sarah Gadon in the titular role.
We don’t know a ton of production details yet, but keep your eye on this one. Trust us.
It (Vertigo Entertainment) — Movie (x2)
“In a small town in Maine, seven children known as The Losers Club come face to face with life problems, bullies and a monster that takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise.” — IMDB
When it was announced that Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation) was set to direct a remake of Stephen King’s It, we lost it a little bit. What could be more perfect? Sadly, Cary dropped out due to creative differences with the studio. But our excitement for all things Stephen King remains. Currently under the direction of Andrés Muschietti (Mama), the film is shooting in Ontario with Port Hope doubling as Derry.
...who wore it best?
*The lead from Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard, plays Richie Tozier. This time it's his face on a MISSING poster.
LEGION (FX) — TV Series
“David Haller, A.K.A., Legion is a haunted man, with power beyond comprehension. His power does not come free, as it comes at the steep cost of David’s mind. Plagued by numerous split personalities, each commanding a different aspect of his power, David is trying to find his way back to sanity but he’s getting tired and is about to give up until he meets the girl of his dreams.” — IMDB
The acclaimed FX series Fargo, adapted from the Coen brothers’ film of the same name, was created by Noah Hawley in 2014. Ever since, Noah has been one of our absolute favourites. He’s on track for another hit with Legion. The first trailer dropped at Comic Con this year and it’s a doozy. Take a look:
Who wouldn’t be excited about this? Also, it’s being shot in Vancouver — yes!
ICE (AT&T, Entertainment One, Fuqua Films) — TV Series
“A diamond dealer navigates the culturally diverse and otherwise treacherous world of the diamond business.” — IMDB
This 10-episode drama from Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Magnificent Seven) stars Donald Sutherland and Ray Winstone. And it’s being shot right here in Vancouver. Enough said?
WONDER (Lionsgate) — Movie
“A young boy born with a facial deformity is destined to fit in at a new school, and to make everyone understand he’s just another ordinary kid, and that beauty isn’t skin deep.” — IMDB
If you haven’t read R.J. Palacio’s best-selling novel Wonder yet, don't worry. It’s being turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts and Vancouver’s own Jacob Tremblay! You still have time to read it before it comes out if you want to, but just know the visual option is on its way.
Our Facebook was aflutter with shots of local streets being converted by Hollywood magic for this film. Take a look at this lovely note from production!
Like we said, there are tons of films and TV series being shot in Vancouver and around Canada. Our list barely scratches the surface. So if there's anything you're looking forward to seeing, tell us on our social channels! We'd love to hear from you.
