This workshop explores the challenges that writers encounter when writing for video games, and the conventional narrative techniques used to solve them. Video games are an interactive medium: a dynamic experience that unfolds within environments where players are given control over their fate. The Environmental Storytelling workshop will introduce you to powerful narrative techniques that embrace this reality, showing how players discover a game’s world and its inherent rules. You will learn the key concepts guiding this technique, forging a world with its own unique story, utilizing mood boards, diary entries and other effective environmental design techniques.

Interactive Narrative - Session 3

Modern video games have changed the way we tell stories with new perspectives and creative techniques.  This Interactive Narrative introductory workshop will present you with an analogue game system that you will need to dissect and explore, analyzing the individual components essential for creating successful and engaging game stories. You’ll adopt the game’s rule sets, systems and elements in order to craft an original interactive narrative. You’ll combine characters, items, locations and game mechanics to create new encounters for players and build an individualized ‘expansion pack’.
