Job Scope

The ESL Course Developer (Media Arts Focus) for the English for Creative Arts program will design and create curriculum and materials for a 2-month term that is part of a 4-month program. The focus of this curriculum will be ESL in the context of game design and animation. The course developer will ensure that the program and curricula are designed in a way that maximizes student-learning experiences. The ESL developer will create a curriculum outline, lesson plans, and materials for implementing an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the ESL course developer will demonstrate a strong commitment to planning for students’ linguistic improvement as well as achievement of media arts competencies. The course developer will report to the senior educational administrative team at Vancouver Film School.

Media-Specific Competencies

  • Apply critical thinking in concept development of basic animation and game design projects/assignments
  • Understand narrative principles of concept development in animation and game design
  • Demonstrate understanding of visual storytelling through the creation of storyboards

ESL Course Developer Competencies

  • Experience and use of various ESL teaching methods
  • Prepares curriculum outline and course objectives for the course of study following the requirements of the school
  • Prepares lesson plans and corresponding materials
  • Designs assessment tasks and rubrics and other opportunities to provide students with feedback on their learning
  • Keeps and maintains design continuity throughout materials developed
  • Participates in professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops
  • Keeps up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods
  • Performs other duties as required

Job Qualifications


  • University degree and qualifying TESOL certificate or diploma are must-haves
  • Teaching experience in a post-secondary setting or to young adults is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong customer service orientation

  • Ability to recognize individual learning styles and the characteristics of learners
  • A broad knowledge of teaching methods and tools

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (especially Animate CC), Microsoft Office, Word, Power Point; and Moodle
  • Knowledge of Game Design concept development techniques (interactive storytelling, role-playing, player card templates, etc.)

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Relatively flexible conditions – the course developer will mostly be working from the location of their choice and at a time that is convenient to them
  • There will be weekly check-ins and ongoing communication (email, phone or web-meeting) for support during the course development process
