Job Scope


The Head of Department (HOD) of the Digital Design & VR/AR programs will oversee the merger of two programs under one department and leadership structure. The HOD will lead both programs and be tasked with the objective of refining, updating and efficiently assessing the program structure to ensure innovation, sustainability and the most industry-relevant experience for VFS students. This is a full-time role that is required to be on-campus in Vancouver, BC. The anticipated start date for this role will be February 1, 2022.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the HOD of Digital Design and VR/AR will draw from VFS world recognized reputation/brand for training excellence in entertainment arts to focus on the current and future direction of creative technologies programming. The Head will further enhance the quality and integrity of current educational programs and will be a leader in the continual development of both programs. The incumbent will provide the department with a strong educational mandate, identifying and implementing clear educational objectives that are current and relevant to the diverse needs of students and industry/workplace expectations. The HOD will be a leader in promoting and executing VFS longer-term educational goals and operational plans as they relate to the department and the school at large.


Overall VFS Strategy
- Provide key contribution to the formulation and implementation of the overall VFS philosophy, mission, objectives and strategic plan in conjunction with the other VFS Heads of Departments and leadership team
- Create an applied learning environment and training experience by looking at opportunities to integrate our programs with industry
- Identify opportunities for students within an extensive and successful alumni network
- Achieve financial self-sufficiency in daily program operations while adapting and future proofing VFS model of delivery

Overall Program Strategy
- Work collaboratively with the Managing Director, Educational Administration, and other Program Heads on the development and implementation of VFS strategic goals including:
- Common standards of excellence in program design, development and delivery
- Integration and collaboration between programs
- Cross-pollination of instructional staff
- Program planning, budgets, and operational/staffing costs

Core Responsibilities

Primary function of the Head of Digital Design and VR/AR Programs will be to:

  1. Provide educational leadership and direction to all educational offerings related to both programs including the full-time programs, workshops and other short-track programming to ensure a world-class student experience.
  2. Work with Educational Administration and Leadership team to review and update curriculum as necessary in order to keep the student experience in alignment with industry needs and to evaluate operational/staffing models.
  3. Engage faculty, staff, and students assuring a positive, high quality working environment.
  4. Advocate and provide marketing/PR support for the programs.
  5. Grow relationships within the creative technology sector, maintain and grow advisory board, and foster strategic partnerships, in order to keep curriculum and program outcomes current and aligned with industry needs.
  6. Engage and collaborate with partner institutions to foster pathway opportunities for students.
  7. Hire highly effective staff/instructors and direct reports, conduct performance evaluations and assure accountability for high-level performance in areas appropriate to their positions.
  8. Target critical skill sets for faculty positions that are shared across both programs to ensure optimal teaching appointments.
  9. As a member of the Leadership team, engage in discussions involving institutional planning, policy, and other key activities, representing the programs interests effectively.
  10. Work with Educational Administration to oversee accreditation, operations, facilities and other program needs.
  11. Additional duties as required or requested.

Job Qualifications

  • Educational background in VR/AR and/or Digital Design (branding, motion graphics, or interactive) or other related subject areas.
  • 5-7 years of related, progressively responsible, management/leadership experience, demonstrating achievement in a senior administrative position.
  • Strong leadership, communication, diplomacy and people-management skills, with proven skillset in forging harmonious, collaborative, and supportive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills in order to advance creative solutions to complex tasks and provide strategic advice and counsel regarding all business structures and operations in support of curriculum development and program delivery.
  • Excellent project management, change management, and task coordination skills.
  • Familiar with office software and creative and educational technology.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring within an educational setting is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to write clearly and concisely; excellent editing skills.
  • Experience leading, coaching and mentoring staff essential.
  • Must have a proven track record in budget planning, financial management, and production of financial and business reports.
  • Able to deal with a heavy workload while still ensuring day-to-day activities are attended to, and to deal with challenges of multiple competing demands.
  • High degree of professionalism, tact, discretion, and respect is required in all interactions.
