JOE TULIAO

Choreographer, Dancer, and Actor

Joe Tuliao is a Filipino-Canadian choreographer, director, and performer whose boundary-pushing work continues to reshape the entertainment landscape across film, television, and live performance. Joe choreographed the standout K-Pop fantasy sequence in Lionsgate’s hit comedy Joy Ride, a feature film directed by Adele Lim. Joe is also a Leo Award winner for directing, choreographing, and producing the music video for ‘Love Song’ by Warren Flandez.

How It Works

Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a global phenomenon. With 266+ million views, KPop is the most-watched Netflix film ever, due largely to the success of its unforgettable soundtrack, which has broken multiple Billboard records.

Now, actors and animators will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with renowned industry choreographer, Joe Tuliao, and industry animators to composite for a short, animated dance scene, inspired by KPop Demon Hunters and the global K-Pop brand. Actors will audition for dance roles while animators will composite the final scene.

What to Expect at the Bootcamp

The bootcamp kicks off with an Industry Panel with Joe Tuliao and the VFS alumni who worked on KPop Demon Hunters – Matt McDonald (Lighting & Compositing Artist), Daniel Orozco (Visualization TD), and David Cadena (Senior Production Coordinator). Hear firsthand how VFS training prepared our grads to contribute to one of the biggest global hits of the year and discover from Joe how powerful choreography and movement design can elevate storytelling on screen.

PLUS, witness a live production makeup demo – VFS Makeup Design Program Manager Iris Solar will transform her subject into a KPop-inspired creature throughout the day!

Then, attendees will break into groups: Dancers will learn choreography with Joe Tuliao and audition for the 5 roles available for the K-Pop dance number, while animators participate in a workshop that details the process of compositing live action performances into animation.

On Sunday, the dance number will be filmed. The 5 dancers will have the KPop-inspired makeup applied for their on-camera performance, and animators will composite this number for the final animated scene.
