Vancouver Film School (VFS) and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) have partnered to deliver a cross-institutional pathway enabling VFS Writing for Film, Television & Games graduates to complete a Kwantlen Polytechnic University Bachelor of Arts Degree, Major in Creative Writing, or Major in General Studies in as little as 3 years when studying full time. This pathway offers VFS Writing grads the opportunity to combine their industry-focused writing training in Film, Television and Games with KPU’s expansive course offerings on the writing craft, including screenwriting, fiction, poetry, stage drama, as well as new and evolving forms.

About Kwantlen Polytechnic University

As Canada’s only polytechnic university, KPU’s programs focus on hands-on skills, in addition to traditional academics. The applicant must:

  • Meets KPU’s English proficiency requirement
    • completion of a one-year program at VFS meets KPU’s English proficiency requirement
  • Submit either a copy of their high school transcript or post-secondary transcript with at least 24 credits completed

Yes, completion of a diploma at VFS will satisfy KPU’s English proficiency requirement.

  • Bachelor of General Studies – Spring 2023, Summer 2023 and Fall 2023
  • Bachelor of Creative Writing - Spring 2023, Summer 2023 and Fall 2023

Vancouver Film School Students completing the Writing for Film, Television & Games Diploma program will receive a total of 60 transfer credits to apply towards the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Creative Writing or Bachelor of Arts, Major in General Studies programs at KPU. Students can also receive transfer credits to apply towards any program at KPU; however applicable transfer credits will vary depending on the university program selected.

Courses will be offered on both the Surrey and Richmond campuses. However, as Surrey is the main campus, the majority of courses will be offered there. Students can also take some courses on the Langley campus as well.

The cost of per credit is $698.30. In order to complete a degree in four years, students are recommended to take 30 credits per year. You can use KPU’s tuition estimator to calculate the cost.

While there is no discount, VFS graduates completing the Writing for Film, Television & Games Diploma program receive a value of two year’s worth of their education at KPU, resulting in them starting in the third year of the Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies and Creative Writing at KPU. Scholarships are also available to international students.

Application fee is $120 and the confirmation deposit is $2,200 (Note: students applying to Fall 2023 and subsequent semesters will have to pay $5,000 as the confirmation deposit).

International students must study full-time based on the conditions on their study permit.

The Bachelor’s Degree is four years; however, graduates from the Writing for Film, Television & Games Diploma program will start in the third year of the two eligible programs at KPU.

At this time, only VFS graduates from the Writing for Film, Television and Games are eligible for transfer credit. This may be expanded to graduates from other programs in the future.

The process is as follows: Apply online > Submit the required documents > upon successful evaluation, offer letter will be sent > pay the confirmation deposit stated in the offer > upon receiving the deposit, Letter of Acceptance will be sent.

Both of these programs are open intake and available in all the three semesters in a year. The average class size is 35.

You can work up to 20 hours per week during your regular full-time semesters as long as you continue to meet IRCC requirements.

As long as you have complied with all IRCC rules and regulations, completion of a bachelor’s degree at KPU should make you eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit.
