The VFS-BCIT Degree Pathway

 

Vancouver Film School (VFS) and British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) have partnered together to create the VFS-BCIT Pathway: a cross-institutional agreement enabling VFS graduates to fast-track into BCIT’s School of Business.

About The Program

What is the VFS-BCIT Degree Pathway?

This pathway allows students graduating from 10 of VFS's advanced diploma programs (1 year) to fast-track into BCIT’s Business Management Advanced Diploma program, Technical Arts Advanced Diploma program, and/or Bachelor of Business Administration program. Gain a production-business education that will prepare you to succeed in today’s creative economy.

VFS programs eligible for this pathway are the following:

  • 3D Animation & Visual Effects
  • Classical Animation
  • Digital Design
  • Film Production
  • Game Design
  • Programming for Games, Web & Mobile
  • Sound Design for Visual Media
  • Writing for Film, Television & Games
  • Animation Concept Art
  • Acting for Film & Television

Note: VFS programs NOT eligible include: Makeup for Film & Television and VR/AR Design & Development.

BCIT programs eligible for this pathway are the following:

  • BCIT Technical Arts (TA) Advanced Diploma
  • BCIT Business Management (BM) Advanced Diploma
  • BCIT Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

Ten VFS diploma programs are part of the VFS-BCIT Pathway. Students who do not meet the requirements for these programs are eligible to enroll in one of VFS’s preparatory programs, which includes Foundation Visual Art & Design and Acting Essentials.

VFS Preparatory Programs (Acting Essentials, Foundation Visual Art & Design)

- Application form

- High school completion or equivalent

- Copy of passport / Government I.D.

- Two reference letters, including at least one from an academic teacher

- TOEFL 68 (iBT) or IELTS Band 6.0 or VFS-approved equivalent

 

VFS Core Programs: Year 1 (All Other Programs)

- Application form

- Copy of passport

- Two reference letters, including at least one from an academic teacher

- Program specific requirements

- TOEFL 80 (iBT) or IELTS Band 6.5 or VFS-approved equivalent

 

BCIT Core Program: Year 2

- Successful completion of a VFS core

- Program: Year 1 with a GPA of 2.0/64.5% or higher

- English 12 – 67% or equivalent. Common equivalencies include: IELTS Band 6.5 or the BCIT English Competency Assessment (COMM 0015 with 70%) to satisfy BCIT’s English proficiency benchmark requirement. BCIT now accepts Duolingo with a minimum score of 115.

- In-person or online interview (Technical Arts Advanced Diploma)

- Digital portfolio or reel demonstrating aptitude in technical or artistic skills consisting of 4-7 pieces of the applicant's best work including drawings, paintings, photography, graphic design, storyboards, visual effects, 2D image composition, 3D artwork, models, or animation; or programming projects related to web, mobile, games, or desktop applications. (Technical Arts Advanced Diploma)

 

BCIT Degree Program: Year 3

- Successful completion of BCIT's Business Management Advanced Diploma (70% overall in all 14 courses), and 70% cumulative average in the following courses:

ECON 2200 - Macroeconomics
COMM 3111 – Managerial Communications
FMGT 2152 – Accounting for Management
OPMT 5515 - Quantitative Methods for Managers
MKTG 4010 - Marketing Management Strategic Planning

BCIT's full-time Business Management Advanced Diploma and Technical Arts Advanced Diploma programs commence in the fall, after Canadian Labour Day weekend. To align with this, the best start dates for VFS programs are the Spring and Summer terms.

Self-directed studies also commence at the beginning of January, April, and September. Also, Summer Intensive sessions start in June, July, and August. For information about full- and part-time study options, contact the BCIT SITE Centre.

After you have completed your 3rd Term at VFS and you have received an official transcript from VFS highlighting all of your Term 1-3 grades, you will be eligible to apply to BCIT. Only 50 exclusive full-time seats are available for VFS graduates each September. Please note, self-directed study options may also be available.

You can apply for the VFS-BCIT Pathway on BCIT’s website. Click the green button which says Start Assessment to begin your application. Please note that students must have completed half of their course work at VFS before provisional acceptance can be granted for the Full-time program, and that all admissions requirements must be completed to register in Part-time courses.

BCIT Technical Arts Advanced Diploma:

The program started receiving applications on December 1st. There are maximum 25 seats and when they are taken, the wait list starts. While there is no deadline, the application process will close when the seats are full with a 50% wait list. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to apply earlier if possible.

BCIT Business Management Advanced Diploma and BCIT Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA):

Only 50 exclusive full-time seats are available for VFS graduates each September.

BCIT Technical Arts Advanced Diploma:

There are maximum 25 seats and when they are taken, the wait list starts.
