Go beyond computer labs and classrooms. VFS’s Production Centre gets you creating & collaborating in a real studio environment from day one, working with industry-level tools in pro-grade spaces: motion capture volume, render farm, 180° green screen studio, & more.

Many schools offer only one program/discipline. At VFS, you’ll create alongside students from our 3D Animation & Visual Effects and Game Design programs – giving you the full scope of a concept art pipeline.

VFS's Production-Based Model
VFS’s 12-month diploma programs have always centered around immersing you in production, for a hands-on experience that closely reflects real industry environments and workflows. For flexibility, we have added options that allow you to select different delivery models – either fully in-person over 12 months or an online/on-campus hybrid experience.
FUNDAMENTALS
Build a foundation in concept art and learn all you need to know to get started as a creative entrepreneur. Aimed at aspiring animators interested in working at a studio, but wanting to create their own content.
Term: 1
PRODUCTION STUDIO
Build a professional production portfolio that proves to studios you’re ready to be hired and start working.
Terms: 2-4
STUDIO COLLABORATION:
Create a professional pitch package – collaborating with VFS 3D Animation & VFX and Game Design students. Guidance every step of the way from our veteran industry faculty.
Terms: 5-6
On-Campus Delivery

DURATION:
On-Campus: 1 year
YOU’LL GRADUATE WITH:
Professional quality work, from various team productions and projects, that will make up your career portfolio.
AFTER GRADUATION:
Apply for junior concept artist positions at major studios in North America and globally. Be well prepared for independent production and emerging markets.
- Portfolio of 12 pieces (Must include examples of digital work. Can include traditional art, sketches, painting, fan art, life drawing, photography, and/or motion graphics); OR
- Completion of VFS’s Foundation – Animation program
- $25,950 (Domestic)

Hybrid Delivery
VFS's new Hybrid Model will allow concept artists of various backgrounds and skill levels to access our program through a combination of online & on-campus learning. With entry/completion points at each stage, you have the option to enrol in select stages only or take breaks in between. Each stage offers its own completion certificate, but completing all three stages earns you your diploma.
This is VFS’s signature, hands-on training – delivered differently.

Each stage offers its own certificate of completion, but students who complete all three stages receive their VFS diploma for the best preparation possible for the fast-changing industry of today and tomorrow.

Online: 3 months
YOU’LL COMPLETE WITH:
A foundational skill set in concept art, the start of your career portfolio, and the prerequisites to continue into Stage 2
AFTER YOU COMPLETE:
- Continue on to Stage 2 for further training/production experience, OR
- Continue into Stage 2 for further training/production experience, OR
- Start out as a creative entrepreneur (YouTube, other platforms, develop your own business), OR
- Apply for roles in certain industries (i.e., marketing, enterprise), OR
- Apply for entry level roles in less mature entertainment markets
- Portfolio of 12 pieces (Must include examples of digital work. Can include traditional art, sketches, painting, fan art, life drawing, photography, and/or motion graphics); OR
- Completion of VFS’s Foundation – Animation program
- $2,500 CAD (DOMESTIC)
- $3,500 CAD (INT’L)

Term: 2-4
DURATION:
On-Campus: 6 months
YOU’LL COMPLETE WITH:
Professional quality work, from various team productions and projects, that will make up your career portfolio
AFTER YOU COMPLETE:
- Continue on to Stage 3 for further training/production experience, OR
- Use your specialized production portfolio to apply for entry level jobs at film, TV, and game studios in North America
- Completion of Stage 1 OR OR
- Software knowledge in Adobe Creative Cloud
- $12,975 CAD (DOMESTIC)
- $17,000 CAD (INT’L)

Term: 5-6
DURATION:
On-Campus: 4 months
OR
Online: 4 months
YOU’LL GRADUATE WITH:
A polished, professional pitch package for job applications to studios and creative agencies.
AFTER GRADUATION:
With your pitch package serving as the signature piece of your portfolio, apply for junior concept artist positions at major studios in North America and globally. Be well prepared for independent production and emerging markets.

Program Overview
Term 01
Explore the fundamentals of 2D illustration for animation, advanced digital painting techniques, and learn how to communicate visually. Collaborate on exciting group projects when you design a new racing game vehicle.
Term 02
Expand your storytelling through concept art skills by creating new and exciting worlds, as you and your collaborative group reimagine fantastical environments.
Term 03
Compelling characters are at the very core of storytelling. Work on designing a cast of characters for the next hit TV show, and expand your knowledge of how to tell authentic and memorable stories.
Term 04
Learn how to be inspired by the world and media around you, and apply it to a full concept art and character design package filled with exciting characters, mind-blowing vehicles, and worlds no one has ever imagined.
Term 05
Create a personal and completely original high-quality pitch package that will form the backbone of your portfolio.
Term 06
Focus on preparing for your career in concept art film, television, games, interactive media, comic arts, illustration, or something new that you could have never imagined!

Requirements
You will be asked to submit one of the following along with your application. Your advisor can help with selecting the best option.
Send us samples of your work that can include still-life drawings, life drawings, character or environment sketches, and computer artwork (e.g., Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). Maximum 12 pieces.
When you talk to your Advisor, let them know that you've completed the Foundation program and they will put a copy of your diploma in your file for you.
