Emmy-winning Director Michael Spiller joins VFS for inaugural In-Production Bootcamp

By VFS, on June 19, 2024

You may have figured out by now that at Vancouver Film School – WE LOVE EVENTS! While we introduced All Access Pass back in late 2023, we're excited to announce our brand-new IN-PRODUCTION BOOTCAMPS – your opportunity to network and learn directly from some of the industry's most-accomplished professionals through incredible workshops.

There's no one better to kick off our first-ever In-Production Bootcamp than Michael Spiller – an Emmy Award-winning Director, Producer, and Cinematographer with 40 years in comedic television.

Michael's illustrious career includes credits on Modern Family, Scrubs, Superstore, and more.

With a BFA in Film from SUNY Purchase, Michael got his start as the Director of Photography on the first season of HBO's Sex and The City. He launched his directing career in season two, directing seven episodes before moving to LA to pursue directing full time.

His credits include more than 20 episodes each of Modern Family (for which he won an Emmy) and Scrubs, as well as multiple episodes of Superstore, Black-ish, The New Girl, The Middle, Cougar Town, Don't Trust the B in Apt 23, Big Love, and Ugly Betty. He was also the Executive Producer/Director for all six seasons of The Mindy Project. Currently, he is about to wrap season three of The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Over three days (July 5-7), Michael will be on-campus for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) event and the In-Production Bootcamp:

THE AMA

Following in the footsteps of industry greats like Matthew Lillard, Lino DiSalvo, and Kevin Smith, Michael takes the stage, alongside Omari Newton – VFS's Head of Acting for Film & Television and Co-Head of Film Production, to examine in detail the working mechanism of a Hollywood comedy sitcom production from the perspective of Actors, Directors, and Writers. Michael will also emphasize the importance of continually learning throughout your career. As always, the audience will have a chance to ask their burning questions.

THE BOOTCAMP

Learn the ins and outs of television production. In this landmark, first-ever VFS experience, you get to be part of a closed-door production lecture with Michael Spiller that highlights the experience of a writer's room, an actors table read, on-set filmmaking, and more. This is an opportunity to enhance your working knowledge of on-set life for multiple departments in the television industry.

VFS's inaugural In-Production Bootcamp event takes place from July 5-7 in Vancouver.

This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get in a room with an Emmy-winning Director to pick his brain and get insider info into the inner workings of television production. Tickets are extremely limited, so reserve your spot while seats are still available!
