Vancouver Film School’s Game Design Series offers three distinct workshops spanning game development. You’ll gain hands-on experience while building the foundation and portfolio necessary to pursue VFS’s 12-month Game Design program. We welcome aspiring game devs, high school students, mature students, and anyone looking to upskill or make a career pivot.
This workshop series can be taken together or on their own. Students who register for all three will receive $30% off!

Intro to Game Design: Blender (online)
Looking to enhance your digital design and game design skills? Receive foundational instruction in Blender – a versatile, industry-standard tool used for creating 3D models, animations, and video games.
Over just four 3-hour classes, you’ll learn the basics of 3D modeling, rigging, animating, UVing. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to use your newly acquired skills to create assets for video games, animations, product placement, and 3D printing!
- Discover the different applications & career-paths that designers and game devs can use Blender for
- Understand the fundamentals of a complete 3D pipeline: modelling, UVing, texturing, shading, rigging, animating, lighting, and rendering
- Model, texture, & render your own 3D prop and create your own 3D character
- Have a clear understanding of next steps to continue improving their skill sets

Intro to Game Development: Unity Engine (online)
Game enthusiasts/aspiring developers – jump into an intensive workshop and learn how to develop in Unity – an industry-standard 3D game engine! You’ll start by learning how to navigate and effectively utilize Unity and then dive right into game creation by learning C# code. By the end of this intensive workshop, you will have created a short playable game in Unity 3D. If you’re looking to get into game development – this introductory workshop is perfect for you.
- Learn the Prefab Workflow and how to prevent repeating tasks during development
- Understand the basics of C# programming language inside Unity
- Understand how to navigate and work within Unity
- Understand how to create and modify scripts inside Unity
- Create and deploy a playable game
- Latest version of Unity (available for free via Unity Hub)
- Computer with dual monitors (recommended), microphone, and camera (optional)
- Stable Internet connection

Intro to Game Design: Unreal Engine (online)
Explore game design and Unreal Engine in this introductory workshop. Whether you’re looking to learn this industry-standard game engine or take meaningful steps into developing your skill set for further post-secondary study, this workshop is for you.
- Learn how to navigate the Unreal Engine 5 editor software
- Create materials using Unreal's material editor and learn about modern rendering techniques
- Design and create a playable level with high-quality game assets
- Learn the basics of Unreal’s Blueprint scripting system to create interactive level elements
- Iteratively test and balance a functional game while implementing your work
- Unreal Engine (Creators License)
- Computer with dual monitors (recommended), microphone, and camera (optional)
- Stable Internet connection
Students are not required to have any previous training or experience.

* Upon successful completion of this SHORT-TRACK workshop, the cost can be deducted from any full-time Advanced Production program tuition at VFS. Only one discount may be applied.
