VFS Faculty consists of the most highly trained professionals in the creative industries. While our full-time instructors provide more one-on-one time with students than any other school, our part-time instructors are pulled right from the heart of the industry, equipped with the most current, relevant industry experience and credits.

Kat
Montagu

Head of Department

Kat is a working writer, story editor, producer, and instructor. She’s prepared countless VFS graduates to work on feature films, in the writers' rooms of TV series, and in game studios. Kat is the Senior Story Editor for Crazy 8s, writes noir drama, and has a Creative Writing MFA from UBC.

 

 

Eduardo
Basile

Instructor

Eduardo Basile is a writer, producer, and director from Brazil. Eduardo began working with theatre companies, live performances, and art installations, but his love of movies naturally took him to the Brazilian film industry, where he worked on several major TV series and feature films.

 

 

Paul
Birkett

Instructor

Paul has worked as a screenwriter since the '90s, penning dozens of feature scripts and teleplays for producers on both sides of the border. His many credits include the airborne horror film Altitude, the war-on-terror drama Drone, and TV movies for SyFy Channel and Lifetime Network.

 

 

Laura
Doyle

Instructor

Laura has worked in both Canada and the US as a television screenwriter on Neon Rider, Madison, Undressed, and Early Edition. She is also a singer-songwriter with over 20 song placements in film and TV. In 2003, she was double nominated for a Genie Award for Best Original Song in a Movie.

 

 

Rick
Drew

Instructor

As a writer/producer, Rick has written five movies and over one hundred hours of TV for series such as MacGyver, Goosebumps, and Twilight Zone. His Road To Avonlea episode, "Incident at Vernon River" won an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program. He's currently developing an animated series.

 

 

Paul
Jensen

Instructor

A 7-time Instructor of the Year and Best Course winner, Paul’s committed passion for cinema has labeled him a "walking encyclopaedia." Paul was the 2nd AD and assistant editor on the feature-length film, Sweet Amerika, and created the web series "The Two Pauls."

 

 

Ita
Margalit

Instructor

Ita is a Leo-nominated writer who has written and produced shows for CBC, CityTV, KVOS, Discovery International, National Geographic Network and the History Channel. Her TV credits include 49th and Main, OCTV, Hail Mary, Blowdown, and When Disaster Strikes.

 

 

Ariadna
Martinez

Instructor

Stolen away from film and TV, Ari was forged as a game writer and narrative designer on series like Dead Rising and Horizon. As a narrative director, she helped create new IPs at Postcard Games Studio. She’s presently typing away at Sucker Punch, best known for Infamous and Ghost of Tsushima.

 

 

Lauren
Martin

Instructor

Lauren has written and performed sketch comedy in festivals across Canada. She auditioned for the VFS Sketch Company in 2006 and has been teaching and directing the Sketch Comedy course since 2018.

 

 

John
Meadows

Instructor

John premiered his first feature film, Wisegirls (starring Mariah Carey) at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, and has worked extensively as a screenwriter and story editor in Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US. John has written for video games, including Avatar: The Game and Dead Rising 2.

 

 

Jessica
Bradford

Instructor

Jessica is an award-winning filmmaker with 20+ years of writing, directing, & producing experience. Her work has been funded by Creative BC, BC Arts Council, the NFB, and Telefilm. She holds an MFA and is a passionate advocate for gender-equity in media.

 

 

Keith
Shaw

Instructor

Keith has produced over 50 movies for SyFy, Lifetime, and other studios. As a writer, he’s worked on movie and TV scripts for Universal, Disney and Sony. Keith wrote the mini-series Easter Island, Mystery and Magic after his pitch won the Banff Television Festival's HD Doc Competition in 2004.

 

 

Sara B
Cooper

Instructor

Sara B Cooper is a Writer and Producer for film & television, with a strong background in taking scripts from development through filming and post-production. Her credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, The X Files, Continuum, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

 

 

Shannon
Blakeman

Program Manager

Shannon was the long-term Production Coordinator for VFS’s Film Production program before becoming the Program Manager for VFS’s Writing for Film, Television & Games program in 2022.

 

 

Devon
Martinez

Program Coordinator

Devon is an Actor, Screenwriter, and Producer based in Port Coquitlam. At VFS, he wrote and co-produced his short film Grabbin’ a Cold One and acted in the VFS Sketch Show. Devon enjoys producing, acting, and making new connections within the local film community.

 

Arias González

Instructor

Rafael has worked as a university lecturer, backend developer, and artificial intelligence/data science engineer. He is passionate about sharing knowledge with others. At VFS, he teaches Unity and Unreal Visual Scripting courses in the Sound Design and Writing programs.

 

Tihemme Gagnon

Instructor

A VFS faculty member since 2009, Tihemme is a screenwriter, story editor, and creative producer of scripted and unscripted TV. Her credits include Chaos & Courage and Queen of the Oil Patch. Her documentary re-ken-si-le-a-shen showcases global approaches to collective healing post-atrocity.

 

Kelsey Kirvan

Instructor

Kelsey is a long-time veteran of the biz, having worked in radio, television, advertising, film, and animation. He has worked as a writer, director, technical director, and producer with work featured on the Comedy Network, CTV, City TV, and MTV Canada.

 

Sim Sahin

Instructor

A former architect, Sim used her enthusiasm about video games to become an Environment Artist. She is currently working at SkyBox Labs as a 3D Environment Artist on Halo Infinite Forge and teaches the "Environmental Storytelling for Games" course at VFS.

 

Duane Adler

Instructor

Duane is an American Screenwriter and Film Director best known for writing numerous films including Save the Last Dance and Step Up. Both grossed over $250 million each, which BroadwayWorld noted as being in the top ten, all-time box office for dance films.
