Max Landis Is Coming to VFS and We're Stoked About It

By VFS Web Team, on June 17, 2016

Between scheduled classes, events, and social activities, there’s always something going on at Vancouver Film School (VFS). But sometimes, the best things aren’t planned. We can thank a random comic book shop encounter for one event taking place next week and, not gonna lie, it’s pretty rad.

Last month, a VFS student bumped into none other than Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra, Victor Frankenstein) at Golden Age Collectables on Granville street. The 7th issue of Max’s Superman: American Alien series had dropped, and he was going to be onsite signing comics that weekend. The student asked Max if he would consider speaking at VFS and, despite his insane schedule, Max sent VFS a tweet with a very, very gracious offer. Now, he’s set to talk to some of our students about the challenges of getting projects off the ground, adapting for the screen, and running a show.

Max is currently showrunning Dirk Gently — a new TV series based on the cult novels Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. It’s being shot right here in Vancity, and his fresh take on the series already has a ton of buzz. We can't wait to hear what Max has to say about his experiences as a writer, director, and producer.

Check out some other cool things that we've recently celebrated, along with events coming up at VFS:

Breakdown Services – Four VFS acting students won the Breakdown Services Vancouver Grad Showcase, which is an initiative to promote emerging Vancouver talent to casting directors across North America. Students were asked to submit a scene of their choice to be reviewed by a panel of casting directors. Check out the video of their submissions below. Many congratulations to Jasmine Randhawa, Fraser Dick, Caitlin Wall, and Katherine Bransgrove! We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on you guys!

Summer Intensives – The popular VFS Summer Intensives are back this July and offer one week tastes of their in-house programs. Not only is it a blast from a creation standpoint, participants get to experience Vancouver in the summer – a gorgeous, lively city that’s like none other!

VFS Exclusive – Have you ever wanted a behind-the-scenes look at VFS? How about access to our amazing alumni and faculty? If you do, come by our Animation + Film campus on July 14 and you’ll get that and more. Click HERE for more details and reserve your spot!

Vancouver Unity Games June Meetup – This is a cool event (Tuesday, June 21) where Game Design students get the opportunity to hear from guest speakers from the industry. And they get to do a little networking, too. It all takes place at the VFS Café – a popular VFS hangout that serves great food!

The Rookies – Chelsea, Community Manager of The Rookies, stopped by VFS yesterday to speak to students about their annual contest that aims to put a spotlight on student work. It was an inspiring evening for all. Check out a few popular videos from our Animation students HERE and HERE
