Step-by-Step Study Permit Process for International Students
Vancouver Film School (VFS) is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) approved by the Canadian government.
- Pick a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) & program: Confirm your school is on the federal DLI list and note its DLI number. You’ll need this on the application.
- Receive your official Letter of Acceptance (LOA): You can’t apply without a formal LOA from the DLI. (Schools also now verify LOAs through IRCC’s portal.)
- Get your Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL): Most new study permit applications must include a PAL/TAL from the province/territory where you’ll study (exception categories exist but assume you’ll need it). If you apply without it, your file could be returned.
- Prove you can pay tuition and living costs: Acceptable proofs include tuition receipts, a Canadian bank account, a GIC, approved loans, etc.
- Apply online: IRCC requires you to apply online in almost all cases. Create an account, complete the forms, upload documents, etc.
- Watch for IRCC messages: Respond promptly to any requests (additional docs, medicals, passport request). Processing times vary by country – check IRCC’s posted times.
- After approval: You’ll receive a port-of-entry letter of introduction and, if needed, a TRV/eTA. Bring your LOA, PAL/TAL, funds proof, and any IRCC letters when you travel.
Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP): VFS graduates can become eligible for a PGWP by completing an additional program through one of our pathway partners. After finishing that program, you may apply for a Canadian PGWP valid for up to 3 years. This work permit provides valuable Canadian work experience, which can help international students transition to Permanent Residency.

Our accelerated 1-year format is perfect for adults who want to quickly transition into entertainment careers without spending 4 years back in school. The entertainment industry values experience and maturity.
VFS gets you industry-ready in 1 year for between $21,288 – $39,735 USD (depending on your program of choice). In the US, schools often set their tuition rates on the basis of student loan availability limits. With lower limits in Canada, VFS does not need to set our tuition rates as high. Therefore, we offer the same training, industry connections and career opportunities at a fraction of the cost.
VFS understands that many students need to balance their studies with part-time work. Depending on the program, there may be opportunities to work while attending school, and VFS Admissions Advisors can help you explore those options.

Yes! Our intensive format works exceptionally well for motivated recent graduates who want to dive deep into their passion. You'll graduate with a professional portfolio and industry connections while your peers are just finishing sophomore year elsewhere. Many other production-based schools do not have full-time faculty like VFS, instead relying only on part-time faculty. A core strength of VFS’s model is that we have both. With a dedicated, full-time faculty, you will have access to greater support, including ongoing academic/career counselling.

International students must apply for the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) as soon as they arrive in Canada, and benefits will activate after a three month waiting period. The cost is CAD $75 per month. During the initial waiting period, students should secure private health coverage. A common option is Guard.me insurance, which costs approximately $2 per day. VFS students can receive a discount for Guard.me by signing up through our Student Services department.
