Key Takeaways

If winter is dominated by Hollywood awards season, fall undoubtedly belongs to the video game industry. Between The Unity Awards (where alumni-made The Silence After recently picked up VFS’s 5th win for Best Student Project!) and The Game Awards, the end of the year is jam-packed with video game goodness.

At the 11th annual Game Awards on December 11, dozens of games were recognized and rewarded for their impact on the game industry in 2025. As with other prestigious awards ceremonies throughout the year, Vancouver Film School’s alumni once again made an unforgettable mark. This year, a total of 257 VFS alumni were credited on projects recognized at The Game Awards – with 96 of these credits on winning games.

This week, we’re pleased to break down these numbers in detail as we celebrate “the Oscars of gaming”.

CLAIR OBSCUR DOMINATED THIS YEAR’S GAME AWARDS

By the end of the evening, Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 emerged as champion. From Game of the Year to Best Narrative, and Indie – Clair Obscur racked up a staggering total of NINE awards. For the gaming community, this came as no surprise. Arguably the year’s most striking game – described by many as “a painting brought to life” – a combo of stunning visuals, innovative combat, and emotionally powerful storytelling helped lead Clair Obscur to victory.

Other major highlights from the evening included big wins for Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight: Silksong, Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Bonanza, Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, and Grand Theft Auto VI for most-anticipated game. Trophies aside, fans were treated to new game trailers as well as big reveals for upcoming Star Wars and Tomb Raider games.
