MovieMaker and VFS have partnered to support creative talent to train for the entertainment industry.

 

MovieMaker Magazine, in partnership with Vancouver Film School, has created a scholarship that will provide creatives the opportunity to train for the growing film & television industry through any of VFS’s globally recognized School of Film & Television programs: Film Production, Acting for Film & Television, Writing for Film, Television & Games, Sound Design for Visual Media, Makeup Design for Film & Television programs.

Scholarship Details

Vancouver Film School is proud to support emerging creative talent with a powerful new scholarship opportunity. All scholarships can be applied to any of VFS’s 1-year School of Film & Television programs. This is your chance to train at a globally ranked film school and launch your career on a global stage.

  • Multiple partial scholarships from a funding pool of up to $100,000

The global entertainment industry is set to reach $3.4 trillion by 2028. Vancouver alone is projected to generate a $4 billion impact in 2025, driven by new studios, increased tax incentives, and funding for diverse creators. With over 45 active film studios, 400+ productions annually, and major players like Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Apple, and Sony consistently shooting here, Vancouver – known as “Hollywood North” – has cemented itself as North America’s third-largest production centre. With nearly 100,000 artists working in BC’s entertainment industry, there’s always room for newly trained talent to step into the spotlight.

Application Process

 

 

The application process is simple, and is broken into two very important parts:

Part 1 – Official Scholarship Application

Part 2 – Official Application to Enroll at Vancouver Film School
*Note to applicants – there is an application processing fee for this section and it can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
*Application Process will require applicants to provide general contact and background information and provide the following information for review and consideration by VFS. 

No official application will be considered or reviewed unless both parts are successfully completed by the applicant. 

 

PART 1 – OFFICIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

You will be required to submit a visual art portfolio of your work. Please be sure the link you submit is working; we must be able to access your portfolio to consider your application. 

 

Film Production: 

Write a synopsis of a film project that you are passionate about making (no longer than one page). Provide the film genre and utilize references to other movies to explain how you would make the film. Explain the concept, vision or idea. In addition, provide a 1-page (maximum) outline of the story. OR, if you have made a film before, submit a link to the film (no more than 2), specifying your role. 

 

Acting for Film & Television: 

Link to a self- tape (maximum six minutes) that includes the following: 

  • State your name on camera 
  • Demonstrate a contemporary film audition monologue in less than one minute 
  • Demonstrate a short contemporary scene (applicant should be on camera and the reader off camera) in less than one minute 
  • If desired, provide a maximum one-minute demo of a special skill (i.e., singing, dance, physical action, etc.) 
  • Provide answers to the following questions in a maximum of two minutes: 
    • Why did you choose your audition pieces? 
    • How long have you wanted to act? 
    • Who inspired you to want to pursue an acting career? 
    • What are your strengths & weaknesses as an actor? 
    • If you can't be an actor, what would you choose to be?

Writing for Film, Television & Games: 

A synopsis of an original feature film, television, or video game project that you are passionate about making. 

  • Write a one-page (maximum) summary. Provide the genre and use references to other movies, television shows and/or games to explain how you would write the project. Explain the concept, vision, and/or idea.  
  • Provide at least two (maximum four) creative writing samples between 4-10 pages each. 
  • Please submit all documents as one merged PDF. 

Sound Design for Visual Media: 

A maximum 500-word letter of intent on why you wish to enrol in the Sound Design program. This should detail your passion for sound design, and why you feel you would be successful in the industry. Detail any previous experience in music or on-location sound recording, sound mixing, etc. Outline why you feel you can be successful in sound design. If you have examples of audio work you have done, this should also be provided via link. 

Makeup Design for Film & Television: 

  • A maximum 500-word letter of intent that conveys your background, your potential, and why you wish to enrol in VFS’s Makeup Design program. 
  • A portfolio consisting of photographs that best illustrates your artistic vision in makeup. These should be done mostly on a model and not on yourself (one or two samples on yourself is acceptable). Please include a range of make-ups such as beauty, injuries, & character that are done on a variety of faces (preferably not all on the same model). Portfolio may have a maximum of 12 pieces, 3 of which may be sketches, paintings, or sculpts. 

 

PART 2 – OFFICIAL APPLICATION TO ENROLL AT VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL

After submitting your application below (Part 1) you must also complete the VFS Enrolment Application Form (Part 2) to be fully eligible for this scholarship. 

Upon successful submission of the VFS Enrolment Application form, a VFS Admissions Advisor will contact you to connect personally, and provide you with an introduction of the school, and life in Vancouver.
 

 

FAQ 

The scholarship is open to applicants who meet the admissions requirements for the eligible programs at Vancouver Film School. Applications will be adjudicated by a panel of VFS representatives, and scholarships will be awarded based on the merit of the applicant’s portfolio and their passion for a career in the entertainment industry.
Applicants must be 19+ at the start of their VFS program.

The scholarship covers VFS tuition costs only, allowing for personal funds to be allocated towards other expenses, including housing, materials, and other miscellaneous living expenses.

Applications open on September 8, 2025, and close on October 10, 2025. You will need to submit an application form and a portfolio specific to the program you are applying for. See ‘Creative Submission Link’ under Part 1 of the application section for more information.

Yes, you can still apply if English is not your first language. Applicants who do not yet meet VFS’s English Language Requirements may receive conditional acceptance. Once you meet the required English proficiency, you will be given full acceptance and be able to begin your program.You will be required to upload your ESL test results if English is not your first language.
