AMA Industry Talk with David Hayter

VFS is thrilled to be hosting David Hayter as the next guest in our AMA Industry Talk series. David follows in the footsteps of industry greats like Kevin Smith, Emmy-winning Director Michael Spiller, and Justin Richmond – Co-Creator of Netflix’s Emmy-winning The Dragon Prince. A legendary voice actor, screenwriter, and the iconic voice behind ‘Solid Snake’ and ‘Big Boss,’ David has left an indelible mark on the world of video games. He’ll discuss his experience in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, the craft of voice acting for games, and what it takes to build a lasting creative career in the evolving game industry.

In-Production Bootcamp

Based on your area of interest, you will participate in a workshop in acting, writing, or performance capture that will give you direct knowledge and experience of how your role is involved in video game cutscenes. All attendees will also attend an Industry Panel on the game industry with David and other video game professionals (special guests to be announced!).

Then, on the final day, you’ll enter Beyond Capture Studios to bring it all together! One script from the workshop will be selected, along with four actors (two as voice actors and two as performance capture assistants) to create the short cutscene. David will guide all attendees through the entire process, offering his expertise. This is the ultimate skill set power-up, and you’ll walk away with serious video game experience (and bragging rights) under your belt!

1. What is GAME OPERATIVE: The David Hayter Bootcamp?

A 3-day, in-person event at Vancouver Film School, this bootcamp will have writers and actors collaborate with film & game industry icon David Hayter to write, perform, and produce a short video game cutscene using motion capture technology.

 

2. Who is David Hayter?

David Hayter is the original voice of ‘Solid Snake’ and ‘Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid video game franchise, and an award-winning screenwriter behind films like X-Men, Watchmen, and The Scorpion King. He brings decades of game and film industry experience to this exclusive bootcamp.

 

3. What does the bootcamp include?

  • Friday, July 25: AMA Industry Talk with David Hayter
  • Saturday, July 26: Writing, acting, and performance capture workshops + industry panel
  • Sunday, July 27: Script-to-screen production of a video game cutscene at Beyond Capture Studios

 

4. Where does the event take place and how much does it cost?

All sessions are held on-campus at Vancouver Film School, including at Beyond Capture Studios, one of the largest mocap volumes in North America.

5. What happens during the cutscene production?

All attendees will attend a workshop based on their area of interest – acting or writing. All writers will write their version of the cutscene, with one being chosen as the shooting script. Similarly, 4 actors (2 voice actors, 2 mocap assistants) will be selected following their workshop to perform in or assist with the scene on shooting day, under David’s guidance. All other participants will observe and be involved in the creation of the cutscene.
