(VANCOUVER, B.C.) June 21, 2023 – Since Vancouver Film School (VFS) announced on National Indigenous Peoples Day that they will once again be running the Indigenous Peoples Scholarship. As Indigenous artists, performers, and storytellers are a foundational thread in the fabric of the Canadian narrative, VFS created this scholarship to award First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students with the opportunity to study full-time at VFS.

In support of the continued growth of Indigenous artists, a scholarship fund of up to $162,000 will award two full-tuition scholarships, two partial-tuition scholarships of $15,000 each, and an additional three partial-tuition scholarships of $8,000 to the most-promising applicants. Recipients may apply the scholarship to any of VFS’s full-time advanced production programs for start dates in 2023 and 2024.

VFS is proud to once again offer the Indigenous Peoples Scholarship,” says Jonathan Bell, Managing Director of VFS. “This scholarship aims to make the creative industries more accessible by offering industry-level training to promising Indigenous filmmakers, designers, actors, animators, and more. Grace Dove, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Jillian Dion, and Alexander Lasheras are just a few of the talented alumni who have graduated from VFS, and we look forward to continuing our mission of launching the next generations of creative talent.

Winners will learn from experienced professionals working in their industry, graduating in one year with the skills they’ll need to be hired and working right away. They will graduate with a diploma, a creative portfolio which serves as an industry calling card, and a network of connections they’ll use to forge a successful career in their chosen industry.

As Indigenous people, we are natural-born storytellers,” says Jillian Dion, a VFS acting alumna who starred in Martin Scorcese’s latest film Killers of the Flower Moon. “There’s a lot of stories to be told and to be put out into the world.
