The Difference Between Writing a Track and Scoring a Game

Linear music has a known beginning, middle, and end. Interactive music has conditions.

A cue that works in isolation may fail after its fifth loop. A transition that sounds clean in a digital audio workstation may feel late inside gameplay. Music has to be evaluated in context.

Self-directed development may fit someone who already has:

  • A strong musical foundation;
  • Disciplined production habits;
  • Access to collaborators;
  • Informed external feedback;
  • A method for learning implementation;
  • The ability to finish projects without imposed deadlines.

Its limitation is not access to information. Its limitation is the difficulty of reproducing sustained production pressure, specialist critique, multidisciplinary collaboration, and repeated review alone.

How VFS Supports a Route Into Game Composition

VFS does not treat audio as an isolated creative exercise. The Sound Design for Visual Media program places it inside production.

The full-time, 12-month diploma covers film and television post-production alongside interactive game audio. Does a video game composer need a music degree?
Not universally. Education requirements vary by role and employer. Musical capability, production experience, implementation knowledge, completed projects, and portfolio quality all affect hiring decisions.

Does a game composer need to know Wwise?
