Warcraft, based on the popular online-role-playing game World of Warcraft, opens in theatres today and stars Travis Fimmel (Lothar), Toby Kebbell (Durotan), Paula Patton (Garona), Dominic Cooper (Llane Wrynn), and Ben Foster (Medivh). The film has already soared to record in China, making a two-day total of $90.6 million-$92.2 million. Yes. It beat Star Wars…
Historically, films based on video games have had a difficult time finding the right balance between mediums. There are certainly some exceptions, but why is it that many fall short? Is it because Hollywood doesn’t understand video games? Do movies break away too much from the source material? Or is it simply that films can’t quite offer audiences the immersive environment that games can? Whatever the reason, it certainly does not dull the appetite of game enthusiasts and film lovers alike.
The director of Warcraft, Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), approached his adaptation with great sincerity – an exercise in serious high fantasy.
