The worst of the worst.
We can all agree that the Suicide Squad marketing efforts have been pretty spectacular -- drumming up levels of excitement that DC hopes will convert into big box office numbers this weekend and beyond. Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad has been a long time coming -- no doubt due to the highly publicized reshoots -- and although the early reviews haven’t been the most flattering, fans will still flock to see it. DC learned that lesson with Batman v Superman, which became the 7th highest-grossing comic book movie in the world despite the harsh critical response.
The list of featured bad guys, and big time actors who play them, in Suicide Squad is definitely long: Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and The Joker (Jared Leto). The good guys are a smaller group, played by Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwood, and Viola freakin’ Davis. A popular criticism is that there are simply too many characters (see above) and storylines to service well, resulting in a narrative hiccup. Yes. It is a lot of talent to squeeze into two hours and a PG-13 rating, but, on the flip side, it’ll be pretty awesome to see Ayer try.
Will DC finally catch up to Marvel with its latest offering? Or will we have to wait for Wonder Woman to save the day? Regardless, we’re excited. And we’re doubly excited to see how Ayer pushes the dark vein of humour in Suicide Squad – a refreshing change from some of the ultra-dark films in the DC universe. Heath Ledger’s Joker put it best: Why so serious? We’re lookin’ at you, Superman.

If you see the film and don’t like it, Pokémon Go is still a thing you can do.
