VFS Grads Add Magic to Doctor Strange and Trolls

By VFS Web Team, on November 4, 2016

It feels like ages ago since the first Doctor Strange trailer was released, dropping us into a lush, visual world that felt entirely different from other Marvel properties. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, there’s no doubt that the acting will be stellar, but will Doctor Strange amount to more than just another superhero flick? According to early reviews, the answer is a resounding yes. This is good news considering the long-standing plans Marvel has for massaging Strange into the Avengers universe and, of course, more Doctor Strange films.

It’s always an exciting time when a new Marvel character is introduced to the screen, especially one as beloved as Doctor Strange. And let’s face it: Marvel just does it right.

We want to congratulate VFS grads from 3D Animation + Visual Effects and Digital Design who helped make Doctor Strange the psychedelic trip we’re promised it will be. They are:

Jesus Yapor (Compositor)
Michael Stewart (Digital Compositor)
Alberto Landeros (Digital Compositor)
Raphael Santos (Digital Compositor)
Pietro Coco (Digital Compositor)
Alvin Keung (Lead Compositor)
Kristin Sedore (Lighting TD)
Casey Rolseth (Lookdev Artist)
Jourdan Biziou (Postvis Supervisor)
Shawn Sahara (Roto and Paint Artist)
Rhea Darch (Visual Effects Artist)

For those of you who grew up in the ‘60s or ‘90s, the Trolls toy craze is most likely familiar to you. The loveable -- and slightly terrifying – collectables took over lunchboxes, keychains, televisions, and a lot of hearts. Now, Dreamworks is trying to reignite the obsession with their new movie, you guessed it, Trolls. The franchise has received a major upgrade from Dreamworks, so a new generation will inherit a much more colourful (if you can believe it) and diverse interpretation of the brand.

If that doesn’t entice you, perhaps Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick will! The talented duo offer up their voice talents, speaking and singing (yes, there’s music!), to the upbeat world that is being threatened by “Bergens” -- a group of grotesque creatures looking to capture and eat trolls in an attempt to feel happiness. Okay, so, we understand wanting to be happy and perhaps resenting a group who have managed to harness the emotion, but cannibalism? REALLY? What about ice cream? Ice cream makes us feel happy and it’s way less work…

Congrats to Javier Solsona (Lead Character Technical Director) and Nicholas Augello (Character FX Artist) from Digital Character Animation for their work on Trolls!

Congrats, all!
