Whether you have prior training in a related field or no experience at all, these VFX workshops have everything you need to take meaningful steps towards portfolio development for post-secondary study and your dream career. We welcome enthusiasts, high school students, mature students, career changers, and newbies. Led by industry all-star Melissa Best (The Jungle Book, Batman V Superman, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2), Sean Kalra (The Walking Dead, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Halo 5: Guardians) and Timothy Zhao (Pacific Rim, Godzilla, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) you can select from a range of interesting workshop topics and explore fundamental VFX skills/techniques.

Intro to Photoshop

Explore the art and science of photo manipulation, a powerful compositing technique that is used in post-production for film and TV, as well as for commercial and corporate projects. Led by a VFS industry instructor you will dive into the fundamentals of Photoshop, learning how to extract images from photographs, layer them and seamlessly integrate them into one image. Learn how the pros optimize photographs, how to add look and feel to an image and how one can make the impossible possible thanks to the magic of Photoshop. With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Navigate the fundamentals of Photoshop in preparation for Compositing for post-production in film, TV, and commercial/corporate industries.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with different tracking toolsets in industry standard compositing software
  • Successfully track painted and/or found reference materials into a moving image sequence
  • Have a developed asset for portfolio use

Photoshop

Intro to Nuke

Explore the basics of Nuke, the industry standard compositing tool used in high-end Film, TV and Commercial work around the globe. The Foundry’s Nuke is used from start to finish in large and complex digital imagery creation by the biggest VFX studios to achieve incredible results in a fast-paced environment. Led by an industry professional, you will learn the ins and outs of the software to get you started on the creation of high-end visual effects. With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Be able to import, modify and export digital image sequences.
  • Understand the importance of working on a non-destructive, node-based software.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the user interface and navigation of Nuke 11.
  • Create and export full digital image sequences with production-ready naming conventions and file formats.
  • Develop basic skills on the most important tasks and techniques used by compositors.

Nuke

Intro to tracking in 2D

Explore the art and science of 2D tracking, a powerful compositing technique that is used in post-production for film and TV, as well as for commercial and corporate projects. Led by a VFS industry instructor you will track painted and found elements into moving image sequences layering them in to augment the scene. See how the pros make future-looking computer displays in sci-fi movies, how text floats in complex title sequences, and how CG elements can be added to actors, props, and scenery. With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Describe 2D tracking and several practical applications for post-production in film, TV, and commercial/corporate industries
  • Understand the importance of working on a non-destructive, node-based software.

Nuke

Intro to Rotoscope

Roto-scoping is an essential compositing technique used by VFX artists for film and television. VFX artists layer CG objects, images and characters into digital footage to produce stunning effects and seamless illusions. Guided by a VFS industry instructor, in this 2-day workshop you will learn how to roto-scope a live-action character out of a digital image sequence and place that element into another scene.

With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Describe rotoscoping and define several practical applications for post-production in film and television.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with rotoscoping toolsets in industry standard compositing software.  
  • Create a travelling mask and trace a moving object and/or character.
  • Roughly composite the rotoscoped element into another scene using basic colour correction and integration techniques. 
  • Combine multiple images and at least one image sequence in a single composition.
  • Render out an image sequence from compositing software.

Nuke

Intro to Paint Fix / Clean Plating

Paint, BG Prep and RotoPaint are essential skills every compositor should have under their belt. In this course you will learn techniques on how to remove unwanted objects, markers, wires and prepare digital footage for final composites. Led by an industry professional, you will complete production techniques from start to finish in order to get you started in Compositing.

With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Remove an object from a scene.
  • Display knowledge on different techniques for plate preparation.
  • Be able to recognize the most common problems in Clean Plating and how to address them.
  • Degrain and Regrain digital footage, to retain total detail of high-end imagery.
  • Render clean plates for final composites.

Nuke

Intro to Keying and Compositing

Keying is a powerful compositing technique wherein compositors take objects and characters from moving camera footage and use them in different compositions. In this workshop you will work with green screen camera footage to pull a clean “matte” using keying tools in industry standard compositing software. Guided by a VFS industry instructor, you will bring together keyed elements and still images to create a composite result.

With additional self-study beyond this workshop series you will be prepared to take steps towards developing your portfolio for industry or advanced study.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Describe keying and define several other practical applications for post-production in film and television.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with different keying toolsets in industry standard compositing software.
  • Integrate a keyed assets into a new composition.
  • Use chromakey matte extraction techniques on green-screened actors.
  • Composite the key elements into another scene using basic colour correction, lighting, and integration techniques.

Nuke

Intro to Matchmove in Nuke

Matchmove or Camera Tracking is the science of re-creating the camera movement from a scene in digital space. Widely used in all areas of Visual Effects, matchmoving will teach how to navigate in Nuke's 3D space, create basic primitive objects and add them to a moving shot. Learn about camera types, focal length, sensor sizes and how this comes together to digitalize real world camera movements.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Create and manipulate virtual cameras in Nuke's 3D space.
  • Create and place basic 3D objects and text to a moving scene.
  • Describe and recognize different lenses.
  • Undistort and distort digital footage for camera tracking.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in navigation, manipulation and integration of 3D elements onto 2D footage.
  • Matchmove virtual cameras to re-create real camera movements.

Nuke

Intro to 3D Animation

Explore 3D Animation in this intro workshop for adults who are seeking new career opportunities in BC's booming creative economy. Learn how to represent forces including weight and gravity, and create the illusion of character motion over time in Maya–industry standard animation software.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Create the illusion of motion by modifying values over time
  • Effectively represent forces including weight and gravity
  • Demonstrate proficiency using function curves and use them to create 3D Animation
  • Identify the core mechanics and principals for creating 3D computer animation
  • Have a developed asset for portfolio use

Intro to Modeling

In this introductory course you will explore 3D modeling with an industry expert instructor, learning to model simple organic and hard-surface objects, situating and lighting them in simple 3D micro environment using Maya, industry standard modelling software.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will:

  • Build hard surface and organic models
  • Utilize a variety of modeling tools and techniques
  • Build geometry with the aim of matching target reference
  • Demonstrate proficiency using the interface and tools within 3D modeling industry software
  • Build and render a very simple 3D micro environment consisting of at least 3 props and 2 walls
  • Have a developed asset for portfolio use

Melissa Best

Melissa brings 17 years of VFX industry and teaching experience to VFS. With over 60 feature film and television credits to date, she recently expanded her expertise into the realm of PC games. Melissa finds a passion for teaching and mentoring and has taught at various studios in L.A., San Francisco, Vancouver, and most recently in Mumbai. As a Compositing Supervisor, Melissa has contributed to films such as The Jungle Book, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

About Sean Kalra

 
Sean Kalra

Sean Kalra is a visual effects artist who has worked on projects for some of the biggest clients in the industry including Warner Bros., Fox, Legendary Digital, 343 Industries, ABC and Bad Robot. Sean has worked on TV shows, films, and video games. Some of his credits include The Walking Dead, Ant-Man and the Wasp, The 100, Halo 5: Guardians. Most recently, Sean has worked on a short film called 'Unbound' where he was the VFX Supervisor, and as a digital compositor on several film projects including Annhilation, First Man and Venom.

Timothy Zhao

Timothy Zhao is a visual effects artist with several years of experience working in high-end feature films, TV and commercials. He specializes in Nuke, After Effects and Maya and has worked in Zoic Studios, ICON Studios, Rodeo FX among others in the industry. He has contributed to several projects and his credits include Pacific Rim, Godzilla, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Once Upon a Time, among others. Timothy is devoted to sharing his passion for the industry with our students at VFS.
